The author's reputation and the cover blurb do that. But, book trailers don't hurt and may influence some readers. Certainly there are some nice ones available, including those by Yellow Rose RWA members, Ashley Kath-Bilsky and Brenda Novak. Authors have to do everything they can to promote their books. If the book trailer influences only a few people to buy, that's more books sold. Can't hurt. They don’t make me want to buy the book. The author’s reputation and the cover blurb do that.
